Apple unveils the 1-pound iPad Air with a 9.7-inch Retina display: shipping November 1st for $499

Speaking at today's launch event in San Francisco, Phil Schiller just announced the next iteration of the company's tablet. Naturally, it's thinner, lighter and more powerful -- hence the new name: the iPad Air. And Cupertino takes that moniker seriously; this slate weighs just one pound (down from the fourth-gen model's 1.4 pounds). It also boasts a 43 percent thinner bezel and a 20-percent thinner profile; it's just 7.5mm thick this time around.

As expected, the new iPad Air sports a 9.7-inch Retina display, and there's an A7 processor under the hood along with an M7 motion chip. The 5-megapixel iSight camera is capable of shooting 1080p video, and the FaceTime camera on the front includes "larger pixels" and a backside-illuminated sensor for better image quality. Finally, the iPad Air sports dual mics. As far as battery life goes, expect about 10 hours.

The Air will ship on November 1st to several countries, including the US, UK, China and Japan. Notably, this is the first time China will get the iPad on launch day. When the tablet is available, you'll have your choice of "silver and white" or "space gray and black" color options.

Apple unveiled the fifth generation of the iPad on Tuesday at an event in San Francisco, called the iPad Air. The new model sports a thinner design as well as a and a 64-bit processor, a feature first seen in the iPhone 5S.

The physical design is lighter and thinner. Where the previous iPad was 1.4 pounds, the iPad Air is just 1 pound. The thickness drops from 9.4 millimeters to 7.5 mm. Apple says the iPad Air is the lightest "full-size" tablet in the world.

The chip inside the iPad Air is the same as the one in the iPhone 5S, the 64-bit A7. Apple says the performance is double that of the previous generation. Compared to the first iPad, the iPad Air has 8x the performance and 72x better performance on graphics.

The pricing is the same as previous iPads, starting at $499 for 16GB, available in white, black and "space gray." The iPad 4 gets discontinued, but Apple is keeping the two-year-old iPad 2 in its lineup, starting at $399 for 16GB.

The iPad Air will go on sale worldwide Nov. 1.

Rumors and leaks have surrounded the iPad 5 ever since the previous generation arrived about a year ago. The iPhone 5S provided many clues about the direction Apple was heading with its mobile products, such as the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor and a 64-bit chip. A physical redesign had been predicted as well.
